We all feel sad at times. Maybe you had a tough day at college or someone said something hurtful. You might cry, talk to a friend, eat your favourite snack, and slowly start to feel better. Sadness comes and goes because it is linked to specific situations.
Depression is not like that. It feels like a heavy cloud that refuses to move, even when life looks fine from the outside. It can make even daily tasks, such as getting out of bed or brushing your hair, feel exhausting. People often describe it as feeling numb, empty, or disconnected from everything they once cared about.
Some common signs include
- Losing interest in favorite activities
- Sleep changes (too little or too much)
- Constant tiredness
- Difficulty concentrating
- Wanting to isolate from others
- Thoughts filled with guilt or hopelessness
A person with depression may laugh in front of others and cry when alone. They may appear strong, but inside they are fighting a silent battle.
Depression does not mean you are weak. Our brain chemistry, life stress, trauma, or even genetics can play a role. Sometimes there is no clear reason behind it, which makes the struggle even more confusing.
The most important message is this: depression is treatable. Counseling can help people understand what they are going through. Medications can help when symptoms feel too overwhelming. Small acts like talking to someone, going on a walk, or practicing a hobby can slowly bring a sense of light back.
If you or someone you care about feels stuck in that dark cloud for a long time, please reach out for help. Asking for support is a sign of strength. Healing may take time, but it is absolutely possible.
You deserve to feel joy again.
